Reutilisation of hazardous spent fluorescent lamps glass waste as supplementary cementitious material

چکیده
Abstract Spent fluorescent lamps glass (SFLG) waste, manually and mechanically processed in a waste treatment plant, was used to partially replace up 50 wt% Portland cement (PC). Both types exhibited similar pozzolanic activity. The mortars containing 35 wt% SFLG met the specifications for other materials (e.g. fly ash) and, after 90 curing days, their compressive strength values were or higher than those of 100% PC sample (58.8 MPa). Our results provide an alternative reutilization process this hazardous reuse as-received (no washing reduce mercury) contributes less use.

Removal of mercury bonded in residual glass from spent fluorescent lamps.
The current technologies available for recycling fluorescent lamps do not completely remove the phosphor powder attached to the surface of the glass. Consequently, the glass contains the mercury diffused through the glass matrix and the mercury deposited in the phosphor powder that has not been removed during treatment at the recycling plant. A low-cost process, with just one stage, which can b...
متن کاملEFFICIENCY FACTOR OF SUPPLEMENTARY CEMENTITIOUS MATERIALS: A STATE OF ART
The use of supplementary cementing materials is gradually increasing due to technical, economical, and environmental benefits. Supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) are most commonly used in producing ready mixed concrete (RMC). A quantitative understanding of the efficiency of SCMs as a mineral admixture in concrete is essential for its effective utilisation. The performance and effective...
متن کاملUsing Different Methods of Nanofabrication as a New Way to Activate Supplementary Cementitious Materials; a Review
Reducing the consumption of cement with simultaneous utilizing waste materials as cement replacement is preferred for reasons of environmental protection. Blended cements consist of different supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), such as fly ash, silica fume, Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBFS), natural pozzolans, etc. These materials should be chemically activated to show effec...
متن کاملDetermination of mercury distribution inside spent compact fluorescent lamps by atomic absorption spectrometry.
In this study, spent compact fluorescent lamps were characterized to determine the distribution of mercury. The procedure used in this research allowed mercury to be extracted in the vapor phase, from the phosphor powder, and the glass matrix. Mercury concentration in the three phases was determined by the method known as cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry. Median values obtained in the ...
متن کاملThermolysis of Fibreglass Polyester Composite and Reutilisation of the Glass Fibre Residue to Obtain a Glass- Ceramic Material
This study reports the feasibility of reusing glass fibre waste resulting from the thermolysis of polyester fibreglass (PFG) to produce a glass-ceramic material. PFG was treated at 550oC for 3 h in a 9.6 dm thermolytic reactor. This process yielded a solid residue (≈68 wt.%), an oil (≈24 wt.%) and a gas (≈8 wt.%). The oil was mainly composed of aromatic (≈84%) and oxygenated compounds (≈16%) an...
